As the leaves begin to change, nights draw in and the air turns cool, Edinburgh’s streets, closes and parks become even more mystical. Whether you are visiting from oversees or a local looking to explore what’s on your doorstep, autumn is the perfect time to enjoy what Edinburgh has to offer.
Here’s some of the Oink team’s recommendations for things to do in Edinburgh this Autumn.
Edinburgh is believed to be one of the most haunted places in Europe, and with spooky season upon us there is no better time to delve into the city’s darkest secrets with a thrilling ghost and underground walking tour. Learn about the city’s hidden history and tales while exploring its haunted closes, wynds, underground vaults and eerie chambers.
One of Edinburgh’s most photographed view point is a must-visit during any trip to Edinburgh. Situated at the east end of Princes Street and only a 10-minute walk up paved paths and steps, Calton Hill is the perfect place to enjoy panoramic views of the city. Visit during an autumn sunset to see the golden light cast across the iconic skyline and city landmarks including Edinburgh Castle, the Balmoral Hotel clock tower and Old Town rooftops.
All the exploring and walking of the cobbled streets will be sure to make you hungry, and no trip to Edinburgh is complete without a visit to Oink. Stop by one of our three shops on Victoria Street, Canongate, or Hanover Street for a tasty and filling Scottish pulled pork sandwich. Try one of our traditional stuffing and sauce combos or treat yourself to our limited-edition Hot Honey and Bacon Crumb special (only available until 31st October 2026).
If you’re in Edinburgh on 31st October, there’s no better way to mark Halloween than at the Samhuinn Fire Festival. A modern revival of the ancient Celtic new year celebration, Samhuinn tells the story of Summer being overthrown by Winter through a spectacular night of music, dance and immersive theatre. Watch as Calton Hill is transformed by fire-play, thundering drums and acrobatics, creating an atmosphere that is equal parts magical and eerie.
Just a short walk from the city centre, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is one of the best places to experience the changing of the seasons. Spread across 70 acres, the garden comes alive in autumn with vibrant shades of copper, rusty reds and golds as the trees and Japanese maples turn. Take a stroll along the winding paths with leaves crunching beneath your feet, explore the Chinese Hillside and Rock Garden, and head to the top of the lawn for one of the best views of the Edinburgh skyline.
